Australia’s high court overturns ‘misleading’ search ad ruling, says Google was not responsible

Google breathed a sigh of relief when an Australian High Court overturned an earlier federal court ruling which accused them (Google) for running misleading advertisements on their search site. Misleading adverts that some companies took heed to in a plot to hijack traffic from Google competitors. The five High Court judges ruled unanimously in favour of Google. Following the decision a Google spokesperson gave the following comment:

“We welcome the High Court’s unanimous decision that Google cannot be held responsible for the ads that advertisers create for Google’s search engine in Australia. We have strict policies in place that require advertisers to comply with the law. If we are notified of a violation of our policies, we will remove the ads in question.”
